Barbara Jean Carter Bailey, daughter of the late Arletha Miller and Julius Carter, was born on May 21, 1941 in Lowndes County, Georgia. She peacefully departed this life on March 27, 2023 in Charlotte, NC.
She attended the public schools of Lowndes County and graduated from Mt. Zion High School. She later earned her bachelor's degree in Education from Albany State University. In 1965, she married Rev. Dr. Thomas Robinson Bailey, who served in the United States Air Force. As a military family, they lived in many cities – including Wilmington, NC, Tampa, FL, Warner Robins, GA and Macon, GA.
She was an educator in the Bibb County and New Hanover County school systems before retiring from the Ware County school system in Waycross, GA. After retirement, she was an active first lady in the churches where her husband pastored. She remained devoted to educating children by working with the Ware County Recreational Department, where she assisted with the Leaders of Tomorrow After School Program and Summer Day Camp for 10 years.
Barbara was the sweetest person you could ever meet, and her joyful spirit was contagious. She enjoyed singing in the choir, doing crossword and word search puzzles, and watching her daytime soap operas. Later in life, she moved back to Valdosta, GA, where she attended Mount Vienna AME Church and enjoyed spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Tom in 2009, her son Bobby LeDaniel in 1996, and her siblings, Voytelle Miller Gardner, Claytis Knox, and Edward Carter. Left to cherish her memory are her sons Jacobium Muhammad, Valdosta; Roderick Bailey (Rita), Charlotte; Waymon Bailey (Tawanna), Charlotte; Derrick Bailey (Taki), Denver, CO; one sister, Annette Murray, Valdosta; one brother, Earl Carter (Ella), Macon; one sister-in-law, Margaret Bailey Fredlaw (Clarence), Wilmington; a daughter-in-law, Pamela Bailey, Waycross; her grandchildren, Olivia, Jarrett, Bobby, Jr., Tamiya, Takya, Tayla, Karsynrae and Dakota Genar; her great-grandchildren, Paiyton and Bobby, III; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
