Deacon C. Randy Humphrey

August 15, 1951 — August 11, 2019

Alpharetta

Randy Humphrey, age 67, was born to the late Walter and Louise Humphrey, August 15, 1951 in Valdosta, GA. He departed this life on August 11, 2019 after an extensive illness.

Randy loved music. He played a mean trumpet and was a dedicated member of the Pinevale High School Marching Band. Randy graduated from Pinevale in 1969 and earned his college degree from Valdosta State University. Randy’s love of music led him to an early career in radio, working as a disc jockey in Valdosta. On the airwaves, he was affectionately known as “Charming Chuck Cunningham.”  His radio success helped him land his first job in the 'big city' as director of news and public affairs for WIGO in Atlanta, GA.

Randy had a distinguished professional career working with fortune 500     companies and non-profits. Most notably, he served as assistant press secretary for Governor George Busby. Following Busby’s term, Randy joined The Coca-Cola Company and held positions in media relations, urban affairs, corporate community affairs, and corporate contributions. Randy later joined the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Company and served as director of community programs. His career with Coca-Cola spanned more than 25 years.

Randy retired from Coca-Cola in 2004 and gave his full attention to assisting those most in need. He worked with homeless, formerly-incarcerated, and veteran populations. Randy served in positions with the State of Georgia Department of Corrections, the DeKalb County Community Development, and Community Concerns—all dedicated to helping underprivileged and underrepresented groups get the help, care, and attention they need. Randy was a faithful member and deacon at Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church in Atlanta. He also held membership in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the 100 Black Men of Atlanta.

Randy was married to Gaye Humphrey for 23 years. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by Walter Humphrey, Jr. and Cora Humphrey. In addition to his wife, Gaye, Randy is survived by two children, Gregory Allen Humphrey of San Francisco, CA and Regan Michelle Humphrey of Atlanta, GA; two grandchildren, Chaz and Jaylen Humphrey of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Pauline Franklin of Jacksonville, FL and Gwen Irvin of Valdosta, GA; his father-in-law, Judge George Geiger, Sr.; one sister-in law, Lytia Geiger Brown of Atlanta, GA; two brothers-in law, George Geiger Jr. and Roland Geiger, III of Atlanta, GA; many beloved nieces and nephews, including Darryl and Diane Irvin of Stone Mountain, GA, Tracy and Thomas Bradshaw of Lilburn, GA, and Wendy Irvin of Valdosta, GA; and many other relatives and loving friends.
