Evangelist Missionary Velma Thomas Head, 62, of Hahira, Ga, transitioned Tuesday, June 3, 2015.
Birth order and education:
Missionary Velma Head was born June 21, 1952 in Hahira, Georgia, to the late Mr. Roy D. Sr. and Missionary Eva Mae Thomas. She was the fourth of 11 children. She was educated in the Valdosta City School system, and was the first group from Pinevale High School to integrate Valdosta High School in the1969-70 school year. Velma sung in the chorus all through high school, and was a member of FHA, the PAMS Club, and the Jazzman Club in her senior year. She graduated from Valdosta High School in 1970 and from Valdosta Tech in 1971, earning her diploma in Clerical Studies.
She then met and married Mr. Larry Head, and to this union, two children were born, Rhonda and Pamela.
Professional experience:
Missionary Head’s professional career with the Department of Defense started in 1971 as a Clerk Typist in the Consolidated Base Personnel Office Message Center at Moody AFB, Georgia. In 1972, she moved to the base library as a Librarians Assistant and Clerk Typist. In 1978, she transferred to the 347th Maintenance Group, and was assigned to the 347th Aircraft Generation Squadron as the program manager for Enlisted and Officer Performance Reports and Decorations, impacting over 1,000 personnel. After 2 years in Maintenance, she transferred to the USAF Hospital Moody as the Secretary for Dental Services. She served in this position for 10 years, maintaining dental records, preparing minutes, and providing overall administrative support to Dental Services. Her outstanding performance resulted in the temporary promotion as the Secretary for Hospital Service to cover a 6 month unexpected position vacancy. In 1990, she was permanently selected to fill this position. In 1992, she was promoted to the Secretary for the 23rd Medical Group Commander, where she superbly served a total of 48 Group and Squadron Commanders.
Christian experience:
Missionary Head was raise and taught the ways of the Lord at St. Paul Church of God in Christ, in Cecil, GA. Under the pastoral leadership of Superintendent Arletha Sermons, she was saved, sanctified, filled with the Holy Ghost, with evidence of speaking in tongues, as the Spirit gave utterance. She was later water baptized by Superintendent Arletha Sermons. She later joined Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, under the pastoral leadership of Superintendent Johnny E. Bradley for ten years. She continued to grow in the Lord under the leadership of Superintendent Bradley. While yet occupying and growing in the Lord, she obeyed the Spirit of the Lord and returned to St. Paul in October of 2014.
She worked in the vineyard of the Lord on a local, district, and state level in many different capacities while waiting on her change. Missionary Head had a love and passion for gospel music, and a gift for working with children.
Local level:
While at St. Paul Church of God in Christ, she served as the church secretary, Devotional Leader, Sunday School Teacher for the Primary and Adult Class, Bible Band teacher, Choir Director of Adult and Youth Choir; and whatever else her hands found to do. While at Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, she served as President of the Women’s Department, Choir Director of the Cradle Roll Choir, member of the Adult Choir and Praise Team, and taught Bible Band, YPWW, YWCC, etc.
District level:
On the Moultrie District level, under Superintendent F. L. Spates, Missionary Head was the Choir Director for many years as well as a member of the District Choir. Under District Missionary Annie B. Richardson, Missionary Velma implemented the “Little Women” and was able to present them to the State. She served as secretary for the David Miller Memorial District for ten years, and was a member of the choir and the District Praise Team.
State level:
Missionary Head was the President of the Jurisdictional State Choir for the past three years. She served as a member of the Women’s Department, and was appointed Choir Director of Send Juda First under the Leadership of Bishop J.W. Leggett and Mother Amy Engram at the Southern Georgia Second Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction of the Church of God in Christ in Macon, GA. In years past, she was a faithful member of the State Sunday School Department and the State Evangelistic Crusade Department. She was a dedicated child of God who worked tirelessly in the church, giving God the praise for all He had allowed her hands to do in her lifetime.
Whom she leaves to mourn:
Preceded in her death are her parents, Mr. Roy D. Sr. and Missionary Eva Mae Thomas; one sister; Deborah Ann Moore.
She leaves to mourn her transition two daughters, Mrs. Rhonda Burgman (Tony) and Chief Petty Officer Pamela Almozon (Jay), two grandchildren whom she loved dearly; Kadeem Burgman and Lauren Almozon, and one godson, Allyon Carter. She has nine siblings, Mother Betty R. Thomas, Missionary Barbara Matchett, Mr. Roy D. Thomas Jr., Mrs. Kathy Ryan (Charles), Mr. Curtis Thomas (Pam), Mr. Kirk Thomas (Vanessa), Ms. Sylvia Latrelle Thomas, Mr. Van F. Thomas, and Mrs. Renita Burns (Louis), a special childhood friend, Delbra Telfort, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church family, and friends.
The Celebration of Life for the late Missionary Velma Head will be held Saturday, June 13, 2015 at 11:00am from the sanctuary of Union Cathedral.
Bishop Wade S. McCrae is the pastor.
Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Public viewing will be conducted Friday, June 12, 2015 from 10:00am - 8:00pm in the Godfrey Funeral Home Chapel.
