Mrs. Gloria Ann Lewis Tonsil

It is with deepest sympathy Godfrey Funeral Home announce Mrs. Gloria Tonsil, age 68, of Valdosta, GA, departed this life Wednesday, September 23, 2015.

Sis. Gloria Ann Lewis Tonsil was born July 16, 1947, to the parents of the late Deacon Lee & Sis. Alberta Lewis in Valdosta, GA. She is the 10th child of 11 children of which four are deceased: Huey McCutchen, Willie L. McCutchen, Emma Sirmans and Mable Lee.

At the age of 6, under the leadership of her cousin, Rev. S.L. Lewis, she joined Union Baptist Church in Valdosta, GA, and was baptized. She regularly attended Sunday School which was a must and sang in the Junior Choir. Later she moved her membership to Day Spring Baptist Church along with her mother and siblings.

She faithfully served many ministries of Day Spring Baptist Church: Sunday School teacher, Easter and Christmas program coordinator, Youth Ministry and Retreat coordinator, Senior Choir vice-president, Senior Mission secretary, Inspirational Choir asst. secretary, Whole Way House secretary, M.J. Hammond Crusade Choir member, the Little River Bapt. Assoc. Youth Dept. and the BTU Convention. Not only did she serve Day Spring, she also labored with the believers of New Bryant Bapt., New Mt. Zion Bapt.,Greater Pleasant Temple, Pentecostal House of Prayer, New Covenant Christian Center, St. Mark Bapt., and Mt. Olive Bapt. Church.

Sis. Tonsil obeyed God’s voice when HE said, “feed the hungry” by feeding the blind, crippled and shut-in; hosting a Thanksgiving Day dinner; and visiting the prison with the Freedom Outreach Prison Ministry.

She is a 1965 graduate of the former Pinevale High School. Later as a parent, she was a secretary for the Lomax-Pinevale Elementary School PTO and as a graduate, she was secretary of the Pinevale High School Reunion.

In the year of 1966, she married her high school football player sweetheart, Mr. Zack Tonsil, Jr. and to this union 3 adorable children were added: Elder Trellany Tonsil, Cassie Tonsil Warren, and Zack Tonsil III.

She is also preceded in death by her mother-in-law: Cassie B. Tonsil; and sister-in-law: Norma Jean Tonsil.

Along with her husband and children, Sis. Gloria Tonsil leaves her legacy of faith and love to her siblings: Johnny C. McCutchen (Mary), Willie H. Lewis (Claudette), Albert H. Lewis (Myrtle), Coretha Baker, Mary Barron and Jessie Willis; her grandchildren: Jamayah Tonsil, Brendan Tonsil, and Bria Tonsil; daughter-in-law: Tavasha Tonsil; son-in-law: William Warren; nine god-children: Kizzie Brown, Michael Jackson, Tanasha Chandler, Antone Ryan, Sharoyal Coleman, Monica Coleman, Kelly Berrian, Lyndell Jones, and Jermaine Beaufort; one brother-in-law: Wallace Holsendolph (Addie); one special god-niece: Sierra Shephard; one special god-nephew: Tommy Shephard; one special angel: Savannah Plumly; her Day Spring family; and a host of family and friends.

The celebration of life for the late Mrs. Gloria Tonsil will be held Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 1:00pm from the sanctuary of Day Spring Baptist Church, 615 Dasher Lane.

Rev. Phillip B. Corker will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Pallbearers Cemetery.

Public viewing will be on Monday, Sept. 28th, from 10:00am to 8:00pm.
