Gregory Bernard Sampson

On Tuesday, May 26, 2020, Gregory Bernard Sampson , departed his earthy life at Select Specialty Hospital in Tallahassee, FL after a lengthy illness.

Gregory was a native of Valdosta and lived most of his life in the “Tom Town” community. Gregory was born January 13, 1958 in Valdosta, GA to the late Edgar Sampson Sr. and Emma L. Sampson. Gregory joined St. Peters A. M. E. Church at an early age and attended until he relocated.

Gregory received his education in the Valdosta City School System and was a 1977 graduate of Valdosta High School. While at VHS, he was a member of the Valdosta Wildcat football and basketball team.

After graduating from VHS, Gregory answered the call of service for his country by enlisting in the United States Army. After serving for several years, he retired as an E-4.

Gregory was preceded in death by his father Edgar Sampson, Sr., Grandparents Willie and Jamie Sampson and John H. and Jessie H. McRae, Aunts Bernice McRae, Annie L. Copeland, Mae Love Alexander, Willie Mae Sampson. Uncles Abraham McRae, William C. McRae, James L. William, John R. McRae, John H. McRae, Lonnie McRae. Daughter in Law Takayah Moore Johnson and Sister in Law Brenda L. Sampson.

Gregory leaves to cherish his memories his son Gregory Johnson, grandchildren Malik, Jaylyn, Kaleb and Khadejah, Mother Emma L. Sampson, Second Mother Pearlie Mae Wright, Sister Carolyn Sampson-Burgess (Warren) all of Valdosta, Brothers Edgar Sampson Jr, of Mechanicsburg, PA, Keith M. Sampson of Valdosta, Aunts Patricia McRae, of Valdosta, Eula McRae of Jacksonville, FL, Kathleen McCray Addison, Nieces Nicole Wright, Marquita Reams, Michelle Sampson, Jadyn Wright, Jaslyn Moore, and Kinsley Carter, all of Valdosta,   Tessa Sampson, Mechanicsburg, PA, and Alaina Sampson Fort Walton Beach, FL. Nephews Edgar Sampson III, Mechanicsburg, PA, William, Hudson, Houston and Jahlil Sampson all of Fort Walton Beach, FL, JaCara Burgess Gainesville, FL, Warren “Tre” Burgess, III (Tiffany) and Hansome Sampson all of Valdosta. Special Cousins Robretta McRae, Brooklyn, NY, Abranna McRae, Valdosta, April McRae, Jacksonville, FL, Eleanor Austin, Matawan, NJ, Betty S. Martin and Willie James Alderman both of Valdosta.

Four Very Special Friends: Gloria Hodges, Monica Wright, Eboni Alexander and Gail Patrick

Other Close Friends: Henry L. Wright, David Nelson and Clara Elliott.

Special Families the Hunters, Gatewoods, Cambridges, Wrights, Washington and the Tom Town Community.

Although, Gregory Johnson and the Sampson family feels a great loss by Gregory’s departure, they all take consolation, in the fact that they had a chance not only to know him but also to love him.

Graveside Services for the late Gregory Bernard Sampson, will be Tuesday, June 2, 2020, 10:00 A.M. at Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Pastor J. Bernard Braswell, II will officiate.

Public Viewing will be Monday, June 1, 2020, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Godfrey Funeral Home.
