Mr. Homer Lee Jackson Sr.

November 20, 1922 — July 29, 2014

Homer Lee Jackson, Sr., 91 years old, was born on November 20, 1922 in Haylow, Georgia to the late Eustace and Lucille Jackson. Homer entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 29, 2014, at South Georgia Medical Center.

Homer was drafted into the Army in 1942. He was an active participant in World War II and because of good behavior and points earned, he was able to leave the military early, whereby he received an honorable discharge.

After leaving the military, Homer worked at Service Tire Company where he repaired flat tires for awhile. Then he became a truck driver for approximately 44 years. He worked for the Langdale Company, Modern Homes Construction Company, and Dowling Bag Company. His hobbies included riding motorcycles and talking on the CB radio. After 23 1/2 years of service, he retired from Dowling Bag Company in 1988. He continued to work part-time driving trucks for Drumheller Bag Company a few days each week. In the early, 2000s, he enjoyed hanging out under the “Tree of Knowledge”, located on Fry Street with other guys of his age. Homer loved spending time on the telephone talking with his family and friends and watching television. In addition, Homer enjoyed sharing his wisdom with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a compassionate person and had a great sense of humor.

Mr. Jackson received Christ at an early age and was a member of Second Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a loving and devoted wife of sixty two years, Sarah Ruth Beaty Jackson; two brothers: David Jackson and Arthur Lee Jackson; one brother in-law: Roosevelt Beaty; grandparents: Henry and Rosa Miller; and a special aunt: Charlie Bee Stokes.

Homer leaves to cherish his memories, four sons: Alfonza Jackson (Elinor) of Valdosta, GA, Homer Jackson, Jr. (Ruth) of Lawton, OK, Joe Jackson of Valdosta, GA and Bernard Jackson (Jannie) of Valdosta, GA; five daughters: Vivian Horton, LaVerne Moss, Linda Jackson, Loretha Copeland (Haywood), all of Valdosta, GA, and Patricia Adams (Phillip) of Savannah, GA; seventeen grandchildren: Alfonza Jackson, Jr., Sonya Jackson, Ralph Moss Jr., Raelyn Covington (James), Major Marcus Moss (Captain Shameka Moss), Voncil Moss, Joel Jenkins II (Tasha), Gwendolyn Young (Fred), Haywood Copeland II (Chauntel), Marlon Jackson (Genitha,Natasha Copeland, Quentin McCann, Adrianne Horton, Samyia Jackson, Brandon Adams, Latoycia Demps and Vincent Foster; thirty-three great-grandchildren; one brother in-law: Willie Beaty; one sister in-law: Elizabeth Jackson; special cousins: David Miller (Elizabeth) and Marie Anderson (Truman); loving niece: Rosa Lee Jackson; special nieces: Vivian Jackson and Shirley Robinson; special nephew: Arthur Lee Jackson, Jr.; special friend: Richard Coffee; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and loving friends.

The celebration of life for the late Mr. Homer Lee Jackson Sr. will be held Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 3:00pm from the sanctuary of Second Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Rev. Leroy Henderson is the pastor and will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Public viewing will be held Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 10:00am - 8:00pm at Godfrey Funeral Home.
