Irene J. Carter was born to the late Arthur Johns and Mary Collier Johns on March 22, 1918, in Lowndes County, Georgia.
Mrs. Carter, fondly called “Sister Gal”, was a devoted wife to the late Mr. Tommie Carter whom she married on February 22, 1944 and was a loving mother to her children. She was a meek virtuous woman who served God with all of her heart, mind and soul. It is because of her faithfulness to the Lord, her family believes she lived to be 102 years old.
Mrs. Carter was a very strong and independent woman. She was homemaker who created an inviting atmosphere of warmth and love for her family and all those in need. When not tending to the need of others, she enjoyed cooking. She was a very good cook and baker. Fruit cakes were her specialty. Until her health failed she was a very active, loyal and dedicated member of Payton AME where she ushered until the age of 93 and was the mother of the church.
On Friday, December 25, while others were celebrating the birth of our Savior, Mother Irene Carter transitioned from earthly labor to heavenly rest.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she is preceded in death by her son: Raymond M. Carter; daughter in-law: Sequita Carter; and all of her siblings: four sisters and four brothers.
Mrs. Carter leaves precious memories to her children: Douglas Carter and Vivian C. Harper both of Valdosta, GA; two granddaughters: Valerie Harper of Valdosta, GA and Amanda Harper of Mankato, MN; two step-grandsons: Roy (Brad) Brown of Atlanta, GA and Troy Brown of Valdosta, GA; three great-grandchildren: Tamia Odum (Josh) of Wake Forest, NC, Brandon Ling and Chansang (Chan) Ling, both of Charlotte, NC and a host of other family members and friends.
