Jeffery R. Perry aka “P-Funk”, was born in Detroit, MI to Armstead R. Perry and Barbara J (Wright) Perry. During his early childhood years, Jeff, his mother and siblings: older sister, Cynthia, older brother, Herbert and younger sister, Cheryl moved to Valdosta.
Jeffery was a very active child. He and his best friend, Herbert, were full of mischief, which made for an interesting childhood. During his early years and adolescence, he became an avid sports fan and could quote the stats from almost any team in any sport, however, his true love was football. During his elementary school years he and his family lived on the Westside of town and made many, many friends. In 1974, Jeffery and his family moved to Forrest Manor where he made many new friends and became known as “Chicken”, because he was skinny and was so fast on his feet. He won many ribbons for track and field.
Jeffery grew up into a fine young man and accepted Christ and was baptized on April 1, 1976. He was a faithful member of the Church of Christ. Upon his graduation from Valdosta High School in 1979, he joined the U.S. Army and was later medically discharged. He went on to join the Job Corps and became a Merchant Marine. After extensive travel, Jeffery returned to Valdosta and became employed at Valdosta State College until his retirement in 2010. An avid Valdosta Wildcat fan, “P-Funk”, has many friends who will miss him dearly.
Jeffery was preceded in death by his brother: Herbert and two grandmothers: Flora Wright and Rosa Perry.
Jeffery leaves to mourn his loss: his mother and father, Barbara and Arthur Ponder; two sister: Cynthia Perry (Aljoson) Crawford of Valdosta, GA and Cheryl Perry-Denegall of Macon, GA; one step-brother: George Ponder; one aunt: Shirley Jones of Macon, GA; two great-aunts: Idella Hampton of Valdosta, GA and Edna Robinson of West Palm Beach, FL; grandmother: Rhodie M. Ponder of Valdosta, GA; two nieces: Sharone Bethea and Rasheeda Jones; three special cousins: Kenneth and Anthony Sermons and Elvis Campbell; god-sister: Debra Holley; special neighbors: Christine, Mr. Williams, Harry Smith and Alonzo Williams; a special co-worker and friend: Rita Wolf, and many other cousins, relatives, co-workers and friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Jeffery R. Perry will be held on Monday, November 7, 2011 at 2:00 PM, from the sanctuary of the Southside Church of Christ with interment in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Bro. Arthur Ponder will officiate.
