John L Lawrence

John L. Lawrence was born April 07, 1938, to the late Tony Lawrence and the late Hattie Jones Lawrence in Brooks County, Georgia.

In the book of Proverbs, Chapter 20, it speaks of how knowing what is right is like deep water in the heart and a wise man will draw from it. John L. Lawrence had a witty sense of wisdom he would often draw from to share his life experiences. As a devoted husband and father, he taught his family the importance of being independent by saying: “Always keep .35 cent in your pocket: a dime to call home and a quarter to get home.” In other words, always have enough money to get back home no matter where you are. Another lesson he taught was decision: “Get what you gone get and get out!” Though funny, his words rang true and he meant what he said.

Mr John L. Lawrence was a hardworking man who provided for his family and being home was his greatest joy. He was there for his family through good and bad times, no matter what. Those who knew him will always remember his special smile and caring heart.

On Monday, July 2, 2018, John L. Lawrence was granted eternal rest.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by one son: Keith Lawrence; two of his sisters: Dorothy Mae Tucker and Joyce Lawrence; and his grandparents: Melissa Jones, Sun Jones, and Missouri Lawrence.

John leaves to mourn yet rejoice and give thanks for his life, a loving wife of 54 years, Mrs. Maxine Lawrence; their children: Barbara Rountree-Shoots (Humphrey) of Orlando, FL, Sandra Pettway of Valdosta, GA, Earnie E. Lawrence (Angela) of Valdosta, GA, Darrel V. Nichols of Valdosta, GA, Sabrina Dennard (Roscoe) of Trenton, NJ, Torrance Lawrence (Meshia) of Columbus, GA, Janice Thomas (Ricky) of Hahira, GA; two sisters: Betty Lou Kelly of Miami, FL and Naomi Lawrence of Miami, FL.; twenty one grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters in-law; four brothers in-law; two special friends: Burton Griffin of Barney, GA, and Ricky Lamb of Naylor, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The Celebration of Life for the late Mr. John L. Lawrence will be Saturday, July 7, 2018, 11:00 a.m., from the sanctuary of Hayes Chapel Baptist Church,  15838 Highway 76N,  Barney, GA.  Rev. Joseph Mobley is pastor and Elder Earl Rountree will officiate.

Interment will follow in the New Salem Church Cemetery, 101 Salem Church Road, Barney, GA.

Public viewing will be Friday, July 6th, noon to 8:00 p.m., at Godfrey Funeral Home.
