Marian “Sug” Richardson Phipps was born August 19, 1930, in Valdosta, GA, to the late Joseph Kealby Richardson and the late Malvenia Screen Richardson. She and her five siblings were raised by the late Mama Willie Richardson.
Marian attended Hahira Elementary and Hahira High School Lowndes County. She graduated from Winchester High School in Monroe, NC. Marian continued her education at Grady Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Atlanta, GA. In March of 1950, Marian graduated with a degree in Nursing and received an award for the highest achievement in her nursing class.
Also while at Grady Memorial Hospital Nursing School, she met, fell in love and married Alfred O. Phipps on December 22, 1950. The only name they ever called each other was “ Darlin ”. They would later relocate to Chicago, IL and to this union, two beautiful children were born: one daughter, Marian aka “Lollipop” and one son, Alfred, Jr.
Marian began her extended nursing career in Chicago at the Presbyterian Saint Luke Hospital. Soon, she was promoted to Head Nurse of Obstetrics. Later, she begin working at the Chicago Department of Public Health where she worked in various locations which included T.B. Clinic, Englewood Health Clinic, and Chicago Addictions Treatment Center. She was a dedicated nurse who enjoyed caring for her patients and used her nursing skills in all areas of her life. She also loved good food and a good cup of coffee.
Marian accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age. She was baptized at Wheat Street Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA. On March 29, 1970, she was confirmed as a Lutheran at the Stephens Lutheran Church in Chicago, IL. She served on the Ladies Auxiliary.
On Tuesday, November 19, the Lord called Marian from earthly labor to heavenly rest.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Obie Phipps, Sr.; her son: Alfred Obie Phipps, Jr.; and her siblings: Geraldine Day, Nancy, Pelmar, Alphonso, and Ulysses Richardson.
Marian leaves to celebrate her life and to cherish precious memories to her daughter: Marian Burns and son in-law, Jim Burns, of Hahira, GA; grandchildren: James Burns, Jamie Woods, and Lisa Norfleet (Perry); one sister: Mable McCormick; special nieces and nephews: Joan Williams (Michael), Deborah Widemond (Steve), Janice Brown, Joseph Michael McCormick, and Frank Phipps, Jr.; five great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; god son: Keith Sumlar; god daughter: Merdean Woods; life long friend: Mary Alice Gibson; and cousins, extended family and friends.
The Celebration of Life for the late Mrs. Marian Richardson Phipps will be Tuesday, November 26, 2019, 11:00 a.m., Godfrey Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment, Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta.
Public viewing, Monday, November 25, 2019, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Godfrey Funeral Home.
