In 1935, Mary Moten was born in Valdosta Ga to the late Robert and Mary Willis. She was the third eldest of 10 children. In 1954, she married Hardy Moten Sr. and from their union, they reared “The Great Eight.”
Mary Moten worked over 20 years in the restaurant business before partnering with her husband to establish and sustain both a cleaning and landscaping business, known as Moten’s Cleaning & Landscaping Services. Mary also owned and operated West Street Fish market, The Fish Palace, and Mary’s Meal in a Bowl. Mary was an exceptional and creative cook that used her culinary skills to foster togetherness and facilitate joy like no other. Mary was known for her strong work ethic, love for family, and willingness to help others in need. Through the Moten Cleaning Services and her restaurants, Mary impacted many lives by creating opportunities, instilling values and giving second chances.
In 1985, Mary graduated from Valdosta Technical College specializing in horticulture and landscaping. In addition to being a skilled horticulturalist, she had a gift for growing people as well.
Mary was a member of Prayer Temple for over 40 years. At church, she was known for her soulful tenor voice that provoked a spirit of praise. She was also known for her ability to teach the word of God.
Her integrity and impeccable character contribute to her stellar reputation in the community, leaving an extraordinary legacy. Mary Moten was truly a woman of GOD.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by two brothers: Eugene Willis and Alfonzo Willis.
She leaves cherished memories to her eight wonderful children: Genetha Willis of Ashburn, GA, Hardy Moten III (Emma) of Macon, GA, Antoine Moten (Debbie) of Orlando, FL, Anthony Moten (Vicki) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Cynthia Moten and Shelia Stacks (Maurice) of Valdosta, Teresa Adams (Rick) of Orlando FL, and Mary S. Moten of Canton, GA; Four Sisters: Theresa Howard of Cleveland, OH, Frances Dykes, Dianna McMillan (Sam) of Valdosta, GA, and Linda Breedlove of Ashburn, GA; Three Brothers: Louis Willis of Valdosta, GA, Theardis Willis (Val) and Verlyn Willis Sr. (Lois) of Atlanta, GA, two Godsons: Leshanti Hodges and Jimmy Williams and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
The Celebration of Life for the late Mrs. Mary Lee Moten will be Saturday, May 4, 2019, 3:00 p.m. from the sanctuary of GracePoint Church, 2206 E. Hill Ave., Valdosta, GA.
Dell Young is the pastor and Dr. Rick Adams will officiate.
Interment, Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta.
Public viewing, Friday, May 3, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Godfrey Funeral Home.
