Mercie D. Mathis was born March 30, 1926 to the late Charlie R. Daniels and the late Laura Lee Houston in Lanier County, GA. She departed this life Wednesday, December 2, 2015, in the comforts of her home surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.
Mercie D. Mathis was a woman with high morals and social character who contributed much time and energy giving to her family and friends. She was a woman of strength, confidence, honor and patience. She opened her mouth in wisdom and the law of kindness was on her tongue. She was a giver of herself and considered her own desires last.
Mercie was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother like no other. She nurtured her children and grandchildren in love, disciplined them with care and wisdom and trained them in the way they should go. There are many capable women, but Mercie D. Mathis surpassed them all. Charm may be false, and beauty may be fleeting, but the woman who fears Jehovah will be praised.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband: Roosevelt Mathis, Sr; one son: Jackie Mathis; and two brothers: Joseph Roberts and Otis Gaines; and three grandchildren: Lakisha Mathis, Thomas James Mathis and Jason Washington.
She leaves her legacy of love and cherished memories to her four children: Roosevelt Mathis, Jr. (Lurice) of New Orleans, LA, Willie Charles Mathis (Denise) of Valdosta, GA, Harold James Goodwine of Valdosta, GA, and Wilma J. Davis of Valdosta, GA; a special granddaughter: Kimberly Matchett (Joseph); fifteen grand-children: Lila Moore, Kimberly L. Matchett (Benjamin), Leetoria Williams, Joaquinn M. Goodwine, Chaniece D. Mathis, Dedrick Mathis (Daisy), Kraighton Davis (Arlene), Ciairra Washington, Chastity McDowell, Paul Washington, Nigel Washington, DeCarlo White (Chester), Terrance Mathis (Diane), Cortez Webb and Devonte Goodwine; eighteen great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Rosetta Mathis; special friend: Frednell Coleman; special caretaker: Sheree Alexander; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
