Mother Ethel Shaw-Hunter-Keys was born in 1928 in Douglas, Georgia, Coffee County, resided in Valdosta, Georgia, and departed the earthly portion of life on August 29, 2018. Dea. James Shaw and his wife, Jessie, were granted parental custody of Mother Keys at a young age. After the death of Dea. Shaw, Ms. Shaw remarried Mr. Darge Wilcox who also preceded her in death.
Mother Keys’ education includes earning a BS Degree in Elementary Education from Savannah State University, a MBA Degree in Special Education from Valdosta State University, and a DBA Degree from Sacramento College and Theological Seminary.
Mother Keys is survived by one daughter: Sandra Hunter-Lawrence; one son: Keenan O’Keefe Hunter (Cynthia); four grandchildren: Kevin Reid, Alisha Hunter-Jones, Kellie Lawrence and Kenya Hunter; four great-grandchildren: Zacchaeus Kier, Zoey Jones, Zia Jones and Ezra “EJ” Jones; god-son: Wallace Strickland (Janice); god-daughter: Angela Greene; special cousins: Minnie Bridges (Walter) and Eva Rucker; and a host of friends and church family.
Mother Keys was a faithful member of House of God Saints in Christ under the leadership of Elder David Michael Northcutt. She served on the Mother’s Board, Communion Committee and the Pastor’s Aide. Additionally, under previous ministries, she has served as a choir member, youth choir director, adult and youth Sunday School teacher, prayer coordinator, supervisor of church decorations and finance committee.
Mother Keys was well known as a traveler with the Senior Citizens Community Center of Valdosta. Her travels included: New York, Maine, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Illinois, Maryland, WDC, and Florida. Her travels outside the U.S. includes: Cairo, Egypt, Jerusalem, Frankfurt, Germany, Trier, Germany, Spangdahlem, Germany, Munich, Germany, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Mannheim, Germany, Bitburg, Germany, Luxembourg, Rome, Italy, Florence, Italy, Venice, Italy, Barcelona, Spain, Madrid, Spain, The Netherlands and London, England.
The Celebration of Life for the late Mother Ethel Shaw-Hunter-Keys will be Saturday, September 8, 2018, 12:00 p.m., from the sanctuary of the Mt. Carmel H.O.G.S.I.C., 1106 Lake Park Road, Valdosta.
Elder David Northcutt, Senior Pastor, will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
Public viewing will Friday, September 7, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; a wake will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00p.m., at Godfrey Funeral Home.
