Mr. Richard Shiver, Jr., affectionately known as “Tip”, was born April 3, 1923 in Valdosta, Georgia to the late Richard Shiver, Sr. and the late Carrie Hart Shiver.
He received his education in the Lowndes County School System and furthered his quest for knowledge at Savannah State University in Savannah, GA.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour at an early age while attending Second Oak Grove Baptist Church in Clyattville, GA. Later, he joined Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church and served faithfully until his health failed.
Outside of his family, one of his greatest passions was his love for farming. Richard Shiver, Jr. was a wonderful husband and father. His family will always remember his special smile, his caring heart and the laughter. He was resilient, intelligent and an innovator. Though a man of few words, his life spoke volume.
On Friday, September 4, 2015, Richard, Jr. transitioned from labor to reward.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife: Catherine Boyd Shiver; one daughter: Argie Shiver; his four sisters: Louneal Graham, Naomi Johnson, Willie Pearl Shiver and Ruby Jean Richardson; his five brothers: John Shiver, Cornelieus Shiver, Artis Shiver, Ralph Shiver and William A. Shiver; his three brothers-in-law: Theodore Graham, Raleigh Johnson, and John Richardson; three sisters-in-law: Mary Lou Shiver, Ollie Mae Shiver and Mattie Shiver.
Richard Jr. leaves to cherish his memories, three children: Catherine Denise Tanksley (Melvin) of Evans, GA; Carolyn Collier (Edward) of Valdosta, GA; and Rev. Marion Drye (Gloria) of Gainesville, FL; two sisters-in-law: Earnestine Shiver and Laverne Shiver Carter of Valdosta, GA; a special care-giver and friend: Evangelist Mary Cole of Jennings, FL; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
The celebration of life for the late Mr. Richard Shiver, Jr., will be held Saturday, September 12, 2015 at 11:00am from the sanctuary of Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church.
Dr. William C. Morgan is the pastor and will officiate.
Interment will follow in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday, September 11, 2015 from 5:00pm - 6:00pm in the Godfrey Funeral Home Chapel.
