Michael T. Harvey born April 12, 1964 in Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven, NC, to William Thomas and Barbara Tean Harvey. Michael was called home Tuesday, July 5, 2016.
Michael attended school in Belhaven, NC, graduating from John A. Wilkinson High School, June 1982, with honors. He would continue his education at the University of Maryland earning an Associate's Degree.
Michael served in the United States Air Force from 1982 to 1994: E-5 Staff Sgt. 49th Supply Squadron, Holloman A.F.B (1982-1986), 833rd Supply Squadron RAF Bentwaters, England (1986-1990), 49th Supply Squadron, Holloman A.F.B (1990-1994), Desert Storm War Veteran. After completing his duty to the military, he relocated his wife and children to Valdosta, GA where he worked as a Correctional Officer with the Georgia Department of Corrections. Over the next 15 years, Michael would become a beloved Sergeant and part of the Special Operations Team. Michael's time in both the Military and as a Correctional Officer would earn him numerous distinctions and awards. Michael was a Self-Proclaimed BBQ Pit Master, Super-fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Carolina Panthers and U.N.C. Chapel Hill Tarheels. He loved his dogs as if they were his own children. He was known for his intelligence, athletic ability, and humor. Michael was a man of few words but when he spoke, you listened. Michael was well loved by classmates, VSP Correctional Colleagues, and most of all his family. He will truly be missed.
Michael is preceded in death by his Grandparents: Deacon William McCoy Harvey and Mother Etta Mae Harvey of Terra Ceia, NC, Joe Nathan Pledger and Fannie Mae Pledger of Hyde County, NC; his Great-grandmother: Emily Harvey of Terra Ceia, NC; and his Brother: Johnnie Spencer of Norfolk, VA.
Michael leaves behind his parents of Washington, North Carolina, William Thomas and Barbara Tean Harvey; a loving wife: Cheryl Harvey of Valdosta, GA; two sons from a previous marriage: Michael J. Harvey (Tiffany Harrell) of Valdosta, GA and Tyrone D. Harvey of Raleigh, NC; one daughter: Michelle Evans (Fredrick McGill) of Valdosta, GA; four sisters: Sharon Whitney of Chocowinity, NC, Claudette Spencer of Norfolk, VA, Toni Harvey of Washington, NC, and Sara Harvey of Washington, NC; four brothers: Marvin L. Harvey of Washington, NC, Jeffrey Spencer (Volanda S.) of Norfolk, VA, Mitchell Harvey of Washington, NC, and Ronald Harvey of Washington, NC; four grandchildren: Cardale Evans Jr., Chrislyn R. Evans, Maliyah McGill , Fredrick McGill Jr. of Valdosta, GA; his father-in-law: Albert J. Cook (Aline) of Nashville, GA; a special friend and godfather to Michael’s son: Rick Denton of Raleigh, NC; and a host of aunts, uncles, family and friends.
The celebration of life for the late SGT Michael T. Harvey will be held Monday, July 11, 2016 at 2:00pm in the Godfrey Funeral Home Chapel.
Pastor Ronnie Brinson will officiate.
Interment will follow in Pallbearers Cemetery
