Wayne Lakent Shiver

September 21, 1951 — December 12, 2017

Mr. Wayne Lakent Shiver was born September 21, 1951, in Coconut Grove Miami to the late Artice and Mattie Shiver.

A 1969 graduate of Gables High School, Wayne was an active player on the varsity football team. He continued his education at FAMU and joined the fraternity “The Persian Rifles” as well as the ROTC. Wayne left FAMU in 1972 to voluntarily serve his country in the United States Army. He was stationed in Hawaii assigned to top secret documents. In 1978, Wayne left the military to begin a family. He was blessed with two daughters-Crystal in 1984 and Cassie in 1991. In the year of 2003, the gift of his first grandchild, Christian, added more joy to his life. He was elated to have a grandson to watch football with. His past time included watching his favorite college football team, the Florida A&M Rattlers and his favorite NFL team, the Miami Dolphins on Sundays.

Education was always of the upmost importance to him, so he returned to college and graduated with a degree in Liberal Arts in 2011 from Miami Dade College. President Barack Obama spoke at the commencement which left a lasting impression on his life. Wayne’s dream was to become a social worker to help people in need. Wayne’s employment history included the North Miami Community Mental Health Center’s START Program and a Park Ranger for Broward County. His love for education led him to become a part-time substitute teacher for the Broward County School System.

He was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, FL, where he enjoyed singing in the South Dade Male Choir and also served as the secretary. He took pleasure in teaching and playing the game of chess. On a sunny day, you could find him educating young men in the Mini Park on Elizabeth and Grand Ave. He carried his chessboard everywhere. He will be remembered by many for his saucy sense of humor. Wayne lived in Miami until 2014 and moved to Lake Mary, FL, for a change in scenery.

On December 12, 2017, at the age of 66, God granted him rest from this earth while receiving care at Oviedo Medical Center, Miami, FL.

In addition to his parents, the late Artice and Mattie Shiver, he is preceded in death by one brother: Ercell Shiver and a sister: Fanette Scott.

Wayne Lakent Shiver is survived by his two loving daughters: Crystal (Jason) Lahee of Lake Mary, FL, and Cassie Shiver of Miami, FL; one grandson whom he adored: Christian Shiver, of Lake Mary, FL; one brother: Michael (Felicia) Shiver of Valdosta, GA; one aunt: Laverne (Sully) Shiver-Carter of Valdosta, GA; special nieces and nephews: Lawanda Scott, Roderick (Suzette) Scott of Miramar, FL, Andria McQueen of Miami, FL, Andre McQueen of Valdosta, GA, Sheree Shiver and Karissa Kanners of Lansing MI; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and many friends.
