Mr. Willie Roy Jones

Willie Roy Jones (86) passed away on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 while in the peace and serenity of his home. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 12th at Godfrey Funeral Home in Valdosta, Georgia. Funeral services will be on Saturday, July 19th (the next weekend) at the Springfield Baptist Church in Senatobia, Mississippi. The interment will be at Springfield Cemetery following the church services. Willie was born on November 14, 1927 to the late James Jones and Amanda Small Jones in Senatobia, Mississippi. He was united in holy matrimony on July 21, 1958 to Joanna Roseman, also of Senatobia, Mississippi.

Willie was member of Springfield Baptist Church in Senatobia, Mississippi. He attended the Moody Air Force Base chapel for the last 41 years. His education included a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Mississippi Valley State University in 1972.

Willie was a decorated veteran; serving 21 years in the United States Air Force. During this time, he was stationed several places in the United States (Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, California, and Colorado). In addition, he was stationed abroad in Japan, Germany, Africa, Vietnam, and Thailand. After retiring from the Air Force in 1973, he taught for fifteen years in the Valdosta City School System at S.L. Mason Elementary School and West Gordon Elementary School, and retired from teaching in 1988. Based on his work in the school system, he then served for over eighteen years as a member of the Valdosta City School System Board of Education.

Professionally, he was affiliated with numerous organizations and societies including the Greater Lowndes Planning Commission (Chairman) and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (President).

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Jones and Amanda Small Jones, as well as by his six brothers (Elton Jones, Tolly Jones, Moddie Jones, Compton Jones, Slayton Jones, and Tommie Sam Jones), and by his six sisters (Texanna Smith, Louril Hill, Brunell Beck, Jeppie Lyles, Eusebia Wren, and James Ella Faulkner). Left to cherish Willie’s memories and contributions are his devoted and loving wife of 56 years, Joanna Roseman Jones; his two sons, Roney Andre Jones (Rhonda) of Gainesville, Florida, and Juan Dante’ Jones (Yasmen) of West Chester, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Savanna Jones, Roney Andre Jones Jr., Hannibal Elijah Jones, Juan Dante Jones II, Joshua Benjamin Jones, Jordan DuVall Jones, and Jacob Dylan Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

The funeral service for the late Mr. Willie Roy Jones will be held at. Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 10:00am in the Godfrey Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. Ulysses Mims will officiate.

Public viewing will be held today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition to the local service, there will be a funeral service for the late Mr. Willie Roy Jones, on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from the sanctuary of Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Senatobia, Mississippi. Interment will follow in the Springfield MBC Cemetery.
